A brief overview of curling<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Curling is one of the oldest ice sports. Its origins are mainly associated with\u00a0Scotland<\/strong>where the oldest known references exist \u2013 for example, a curling stone from Stirling dating from\u00a01511<\/strong>\u00a0nebo slavn\u00fd Brueghel\u016fv obraz\u00a0The Hunters in the Snow<\/em>\u00a0(1565), on which the game is clearly depicted.<\/p>

In the 18th and 19th centuries, curling spread rapidly across Europe and overseas, gradually becoming established as an official sport.
Today, curling has more than 70 member countries<\/strong> of the World Curling Federation, with the largest player base in Canada<\/strong>, where it is played by over 1 million registered players.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Curling at the Olympics<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After years of effort, curling was included among the official Olympic sports in 1998 in Nagano<\/strong>. Since then, it has been part of every Winter Olympic Games and is one of the most popular disciplines among spectators.
Curling is also included in the Paralympic Games<\/strong> in the wheelchair category.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Curling in the Czech Republic<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Curling appeared in our country in 1990<\/strong>, when enthusiasts began building the first facilities, sourcing equipment, and founding clubs as well as a national federation. A turning point came with the establishment of the first specialized curling hall in Prague (2004 \u2013 Roztyly)<\/strong>. The opening of additional halls in Brno and Ostrava<\/strong> in recent years has further supported the development of the sport.<\/p>

Czech national teams regularly take part in the European and World Championships. Significant milestones also include participation in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games (mixed doubles)<\/strong> and the 2026 Winter Olympic Games (men)<\/strong>.<\/p>

Today, around 30 clubs and more than 650 players<\/strong> are registered with the Czech Curling Association.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Principle of the game<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Curling is a tactical team sport played on ice, in which two teams (with 4 players each) take turns sliding granite stones toward the target circle \u2013 the house<\/strong>.<\/p>

The goal is to place your stones closer to the center<\/strong> (the tee) than your opponent\u2019s.<\/p>

Curling is characterized by:<\/p>

  • delivery<\/strong> \u2013 the player releases the stone with rotation, which determines its curve (curl)<\/li>
  • sweeping<\/strong> \u2013 teammates vigorously sweep in front of the stone, influencing its speed and trajectory<\/li>
  • strategy and tactics<\/strong> \u2013 curling is often compared to chess on ice<\/li>
  • fair play<\/strong> \u2013 respect for the opponent and admitting one\u2019s own mistakes are fundamental values of the sport<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Basic rules of the game<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    1. Team composition<\/strong><\/p>

    • 4 players: lead, second, third (vice-skip), skip<\/li>
    • Everyone has a clearly defined role during an end (similar to an inning in baseball).<\/li><\/ul>

      2. Ice track<\/strong><\/p>

      • Length approx. 45 m<\/li>
      • There is a house at both ends \u2013 four concentric circles<\/li><\/ul>

        3. Gameplay<\/strong><\/p>

        • A match is played over 8 or 10 ends<\/strong>.<\/li>
        • In each end, both teams deliver 8 stones<\/strong> (2 per player).<\/li><\/ul>

          4. Sweeping<\/strong><\/p>

          • Sweeping reduces friction and allows:
            • extend the trajectory of the stone<\/li>
            • straighten its curvature<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
            • Controlling the sweep can fundamentally change the outcome of the throw.<\/li><\/ul>

              5. Scoring<\/strong><\/p>

              • After an end is completed, the team whose stone is closest to the center<\/strong> scores.<\/li>
              • The number of points equals the number of a team\u2019s own stones that are closer to the center than the opponent\u2019s best stone<\/li>
              • Stones outside the house do not count<\/li><\/ul>

                6. Behavior on the ice (spirit of curling)<\/strong><\/p>

                • Curling is based on respect, honesty, and consideration.<\/li>
                • Conflicts are resolved by the team skips, not by referees<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
